After working for years and failing to put together the film Shekhar Kapur had almost given up on Paani when Aditya Chopra agreed to produce it. It was a sudden meeting and Shekhar Kapur evidently charmed Chopra completely with his narration, when he agreed to produce the extremely costly film. Yash Raj promptly made multiple announcements related to the film, including Sushant Singh Rajput being chosen to play the lead role in it. However, soon after the company just shut down all action and turned cold to Shekhar Kapur.

Little was known as to what exactly may have gone wrong with it. But Shekhar Kapur just revealed to us actually happened. The director of films like Mr India and Bandit Queen informed that once Aditya Chopra got to the maths of the film, after talking to his team at YRF, he figured that he could possibly not invest close to Rs 150 crore on a film like this.

The reason was simple. While the film demanded grandeur and a massive budget, it was far from being commercial. Kapur wanted to deal with the water crisis in the film. “I started seeing that this (water crisis) was going to be our biggest problem,” he says adding that few others could understand the plight. “But everybody we talk in our world has water coming out of their taps…” he expressed.

Sushant Singh Rajput

Eventually, the film fell through and Kapur is yet to find a producer for it. He is however still keen on making it with Sushant Singh Rajput, whenever it gets made. And that’s an irony because Sushant Singh Rajput is not an actor who commands that kind of budget. His last film Raabta met with an extremely tepid response at the box office.

Not one to sit and rue his luck, Kapur has already moved on to his next story. And this time is to star Kangana Ranaut as the lead face. We hope this film gets made, unlike many of his other films which were announced and never made.
