That Salman Khan is Bollywood’s biggest star is barely arguable. He is the only actor who has unfailingly delivered 100 crore plus collection with all his films since 2011, even as actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have faltered multiple times. And with Tiger Zinda hai, Salman is set to reinstate his position as the biggest mass star in the country.
The box office collections of Tiger Zinda Hai have been epic if nothing more. The film opened to Friday to a thunderous Rs 34.10 crore, making it the highest non-holiday opening for a Hindi film. The film followed it up with Rs 35.30 crore on Saturday. The Sunday ended at Rs 45.53crore which is the biggest ever single-day collection for any Bollywood film. Monday being a Christmas holiday acted as an extended weekend for the film, and it collected Rs 36.54 crore taking its extended weekend total to a huge Rs 151.47 crore in mere there days, with an incredible average of over Rs 37 crore per day!
In comparison, Dangal, which released last year Christmas weekend, had collected Rs 29.78 crore, Rs 34.82 crore and Rs 42.35 crore in the first three days. Of course what was remarkable about Dangal is that the film remained steady for almost two weeks to hit Rs 300 crores in record time. The film eventually ended at Rs 374 crore (domestic).
While it remains to be seen if Tiger Zinda Hai can retain steam for that long, there is little doubt that the film will at least hit 250 crore faster than any other film. It would be interesting to see if the film manages to edge past the Rs 320 crore mark, which is the highest Salman Khan has reached yet. His Bajrangi Bhaijaan had hit that figure.
In the meantime, it is also a foregone conclusion that Tiger Zinda Hai will be the highest grossing film of 2017, which at this moment is held by Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again. The Ek The Tiger sequel should outdo the Golmaal film in next two days. It has already outdone films like Raees, Judwaa 2 and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya – the other films in the highest grossers list – in less than four days since release.
Clearly Salman power beats them all! Of course the film also stars an scintillating Katrina Kaif as a Pakistani spy, and her fan base is quite strong too!
