Monjul Baruah’s Anur: Eyes on the Sunshine, adapted from the short story ‘Bhalpuwar Xomoi’ by acclaimed Assamese author Anuradha Sharma Pujaree, is a poignant and introspective film that delves into the profound loneliness faced by aging parents in a world that often leaves them behind.

The film, while slow-paced, effectively mirrors the languid passage of time for those grappling with isolation and a sense of purposelessness. This deliberate pacing, reminiscent of how moments seem to stretch endlessly during periods of solitude, allows the audience to deeply connect with the characters’ emotional states.

Jahanara Begum delivers a truly remarkable performance as Anupama Baruah, embodying the character with a nuanced understanding of her vulnerabilities and quiet strength. Rajat Kapoor, despite not being a native Assamese speaker, is convincing in his portrayal of Loshit Modliar, bringing a natural charm and a touch of melancholy to the role. Boloram Das, with his effortless energy and natural acting style, adds another layer of depth to the narrative.

The cinematography and editing beautifully capture the essence of the film, effectively conveying the changing moods and the passage of time.

Anur: Eyes on the Sunshine is more than just a story about loneliness. It explores themes of friendship, love, and the unexpected intimacy that can blossom between two strangers during their twilight years. The film also serves as a poignant commentary on the social realities of modern life, where the exodus of younger generations to larger cities leaves behind a void in smaller towns, leaving aging parents to grapple with isolation and a sense of abandonment.

Anur: Eyes on the Sunshine is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that offers a poignant reflection on the human condition. While its slow pace may not appeal to all viewers, it is a testament to the director’s artistic vision and the powerful performances of the cast.

Anur: Eyes on the Sunshine won the National Award for Best Assamese Film, 2021
