Fashion as I see it.- A viewpoint by Radhika Deshmukh

Posted on 01 September 2011 by Fried Guest

The names of Jon Kortajarena, Dree Hemingway, Mark Jacobs, Patricia Gajo, Sarah Casselman, Anna Osmushkina, Christian Lacoix, Paul Frederick and other veterans will forever be etched in the minds of wide eyed and eager, adolescent students of fashion all over the world. Their passage to immortality was engraved in the golden books when they filled our world with vivid hues of Slingback Platforms and Stephano Totes, Red Yacht Bags and Reef Wedges, Fishnet Camisoles and Fern Clutches and Blade Heels and Berets. Their contribution to the world of stars cannot be measured by the number of Alexander Julians and Neiman Marcuses that they have.

Today, though fashion is not just restricted to botoxed ladies with hair-up-dos that have unpronounceable names or snobbish gentlemen looking down their aristocratic noses at earthly mortals. Today fashion does not only mean the expensive dressers or wine drinkers. It does not only involve people who forgot to even thank their stars when they were born with a platinum spoon in their mouth.

Fashion today, does not follow rules, nor does it have a definition. It does not have a set of colors; neither does it have a particular texture. Fashion does not seek a single medium; nor does it seek a result. Fashion does not listen to anyone and neither does it want people to be constricted in its preaching. Fashion does not have a cost today. It does not begin from an object that you wear or do, nor does it end anytime, anywhere. There are no novices of fashion and no masters of fashion.

Fashion has grown immensely with the passage of time. It has soared high by spreading its wings while at the same time spreading its roots deep inside. Fashion today is a world-wide religion that has bound people together, but not tied them in any way. It has taken to the streets instead of being closeted up in swanky ballrooms with glass ceilings.

We see the big names from the fashion world earning big Benjamins with their concepts and ideas. But the real fashionistas are not the ones who have lemon tea and ginger cookies in rooms with floral wall papers, with fashion, but they are the ones who are buddies with fashion and have pop corn and coke with it. The real fashionistas are the ones who have a quiver full of ever burgeoning ideas that lets them get down and get jiggy with fashion. They are the ones who have real fun with fashion while combining different colours, prints and textures and wear what they want and do what they do while staying close to themselves. And they are the ones who will always be rewarded and lauded by fashion in its truest form.

The Flight of Dreams by Priyanka Gogoi

As the shell crumbles, the roof disappears;

I find myself struck by a vision,

And left bewildered, in shock, perhaps choked;

With eyes fixed at the unknown blue

I see an eagle soaring heights,

And think of my dreams that lay

Dismal, drowsy, desperately schizophrenic,

Behind the bars of doubts & fear, untold;

Cocooned within tiring introspection,

My dreams procrastinate like the old Hamlet.

Yet they are alive, looking for liberty,

From the unseen shackles of illusion.

A sudden realization storms in

Creating tremors deep inside

And cautiously unleash the cage.

With a creak opens the door

And lets off the rust to mix with the soil

Sweet smell of lilacs comes floating in the air

The heart overwhelms with joy unbound

I see my dreams flying free,

Chasing the eagle in the vast blue bosom above

To transcend the limits of uncertainty.

Genesis by Heena Aggarwal

Nobody,

The creature poked out his nose,

He saw a land where nothing grows…

His hair wasn’t curly, his temper surly,

He had risen too early which heightened his woes.

Nobody,

The creature lumbered along,

There wasn’t a thing in the world which wasn’t wrong.

This world as created was much over rated,

And, oh! How he hated its success stories long.

Nobody,

The creature lurched on his way

The dust and the blowing wind wished him good day.

But nobody only mumbled and onward he stumbled,

Some people, He grumbled,

Have too much to say.

Nobody,

The creature wanted some thrills

But these sociable folks were worst of his ills.

Amazed he was and confused in his nest

How was the world different from the rest?

Here everybody pets him

And,

Everybody frets him

This world still a mystery to him

But the world now, knows him…

LIFE REGAINED by Geetima Baruah Sarma

A pleasant day ‘twas,

That turned into tears,

Long drive, long journey,

A trip to a distant city.

Left home in the morning,

Dad at the wheel was driving,

Brothers asked me riddles,

I tried to solve the puzzles.

The sun reached overhead,

Sandwiches, sweets we shared,

As destination half-way remained,

A soul-stirring incident happened.

Suddenly the road turned wavy,

The car toppled topsy-turvy,

Rolling once, twice, thrice,

Our tender nerves froze like ice.

I closed my eyes in fear,

O God save us, an earnest prayer,

Then slowly opened my tearful eyes,

But just couldn’t believe my eyes!

Our backs were on the ground,

With countless people all around,

Dad, brothers looked at me,

I heaved a long sigh faintly.

Gradually the crowd dispersed,

Our car lied with wheels upward,

The day in my memories remained,

I thanked God for our lives regained

Baikunthar Pora Naami Aahila E Ram,
Sudharmaar Sobhaate Roila
Devata Sokole Thole Aagborhai,
Basudevore Grihe Goila.

(O Lord! You came down from Baikunth (Lord Vishnu’s Abode),
In the Council of Gods
The Gods chose you (for saving the world)
And you chose Vasudeva’s Place (to be born in))

Today is Janmashtami, and it is believed that Lord Krishna was born on this day. Lord Krishna is one of the most special Gods in Hindu mythology. The time when it is believed that Lord Krishna lived was the time when India was at the peak of science and technology. Philosophy was also at the peak at this time. Srimad Bhagwat Geeta which is perhaps the greatest treatise ever written in the philosophy of life was also written at that time. Janmashtami gives us an opportunity to remind us of that philosophy which we tend to forget in our busy lifestyle. Janmashtami is also significant that it replenishes our faith in the good.

Lord Krishna is also associated with Dance and Music. There are many folk music based on Lord Krishna. Some of Indian Classical Dance forms are entirely based on Lord Krishna and his stories. So, at this time India is culturally very active.

Hope you all enjoy this time.

Wishing you all a Happy Janmashtami,

Happiness

I still cry sometimes, rarely

I still try sometimes, meekly

In pursuit of that, still today

In pursuit of happiness, maybe someday.
